“It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved Chrissie, along with colleague Andrew Bagshaw, was killed while attempting a humanitarian evacuation from Solidar in eastern Ukraine,” Barry’s family said in a statement. “His selfless determination to help the old, the young and the underprivileged made us and his extended family very proud.”
“We never imagined saying goodbye to Chris when he had a whole life ahead of him. He was a loving son, a wonderful brother, a friend to many, and a loving partner to Olga.
“He found himself drawn to Ukraine in March during its darkest hours at the beginning of the Russian invasion and helped those most in need, rescuing over 400 people as well as many abandoned animals. It is impossible to say how much we will miss him but he will be in it.” Our hearts forever. »
“We are honored that he has chosen our family to be a part of,” reads the statement, which was signed by family members Rob, Kristen, and Katy Parry.
The UK Office of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs asked confidentiality of the family at this time.
Learn more about this condition: The two men’s families have previously said they traveled to Ukraine to work as humanitarian volunteers. CNN has not seen any evidence of their involvement in hostilities in Ukraine.
On January 9, Ukrainian police said they were looking for Bagshaw and Barry. Ukrainian police said the two Britons “left Kramatorsk for Solidar” — the scene of the latest heavy fighting — “and lost contact with them,” CNN reported earlier.
