Chinese President Xi Jinping accuses Trudeau of “leaking” details of a conversation to the media

Chinese President Xi Jinping has accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of behaving inappropriately by revealing the contents of a conversation between the two leaders to the media.

The accusations came when the two met in a public place in Bali, Indonesia, where the two leaders are attending the G20 summit.

“Everything we are discussing has been leaked to the newspaper,” Xi told Trudeau through an interpreter.

“This is not (…) the way the conversation went. If there is any sincerity on your part,” Xi said.

Trudeau interrupted the Chinese leader, telling him that although they had differences, they should work together.

We believe in free, open and frank dialogue and this is what we will continue to do. We will continue to look forward to working constructively together, but there will be things that we will not agree on, and we have to…” Trudeau said before interrupting Xi.

“Let’s create the conditions first,” Xi said, extending his hand to Trudeau, before they shook hands and went their separate ways.

Trudeau and Xi spoke briefly on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali on Tuesday. After the informal meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement of the conversation, which indicated the topics discussed and who discussed them.

According to Reading, during the brief discussion between the two leaders — who were at odds over trade and the arrest and detention of two Canadians — Trudeau raised concerns about Media reports That China secretly funded 11 candidates in the 2019 federal election.

The couple were pictured chatting informally in a crowded room in a photo released by the Prime Minister’s Office at the meeting.

Trudeau’s conversation with Xi was not a formal bilateral meeting like the meetings Xi had with other leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Argentine President Alberto Angel Fernandez and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The prime minister’s office said the two leaders also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea’s continued aggression against South Korea, and the upcoming COP15 summit in Montreal.

The reading does not say how Xi responded to any of these questions, only that the two leaders “discussed the importance of continuing dialogue.”

During his closing press conference, Trudeau responded to the incident, saying that his government trusted his citizens to want to know the work he was doing on their behalf.

“I will not hesitate to open up to Canadians, even when we discuss important and sometimes sensitive topics,” Trudeau said.

He added: “Getting the right balance between being open about the differences and the issues we have raised, while being able to work constructively at the same time, is something people have to understand, and that is what Canadians will always do.

Trudeau also used his closing press conference to announce the extension of the mission to train Ukrainian soldiers in Britain under Operation Unity, which has run since 2015, until the end of 2023.

The announcement comes just days after Canada pledged an additional $500 million to support the Ukrainian military.
