Paul Manafort agrees to pay $3.15 million to settle the case with the US government

(CNN) Paul Manafort has agreed to pay $3.15 million. He owes the US government the misrepresentations he made on his tax returns nearly a decade ago, ending the former president’s financial entanglements in the Trump campaign in court.

Manafort did not disclose to the Treasury more than two dozen bank accounts in Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United Kingdom that he used for his political advisory work in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014, according to court documents.

The offshore accounts contained tens of thousands of dollars, which required him to report to the IRS. But Manafort said on his tax returns that he did not have an overseas bank account.

Manafort later admitted not to disclose the accounts as part of his guilty plea to a series of financial and tax offenses in the Mueller investigation. He was granted a pardon by then-President Trump in late 2020, and once again avoided some reimbursement demands.

Court documents say the Justice Department sued Manafort in April of last year “to collect outstanding civil penalties … for his willful failure to timely declare his financial interests in foreign bank accounts.” The DOJ also requested interest and late payment fees from Manafort.

“As part of the settlement, Mr. Manafort agreed to enter the entire judgment in this case, accruing interest,” his lawyers and the Department of Justice told the court in late February. Judge Rodolfo Ruiz II of the United States Court for the Southern District of Florida approved the settlement the next day.

However, the amount is only a small part of Manafort’s financial crime.
