There is no official holiday in Alberta on Monday, the “day of mourning” for the Queen’s death

“I think the best case scenario is for the government to declare a memorial or celebratory holiday and let employers decide whether they want to lock employees down or give them a day off,” said Kathleen Cook of the Canadian Federation of Independent Workers. Work said Tuesday.

As part of the Day of Mourning, all employers are encouraged to provide accommodations for employees to attend the ceremony in the Legislative Council or to celebrate the funeral of Her Late Majesty.

Schools will be encouraged to provide students with opportunities to participate in the day of mourning.

Members of the public can also sign sympathy books at the Alberta Legislative Assembly and other provincial buildings until 4pm on Sunday, September 18th and online until noon on Monday, September 19th.

“Alberta, Canadians and the people of the Commonwealth will gather on this day to mourn the passing of Her Majesty The Queen and to commemorate her long and loyal service,” Prime Minister Jason Kenney said in a press release. “I sincerely hope that the people of Alberta will find time on this day to honor the remarkable life of Queen Elizabeth II and strongly encourage employers and schools to appropriately celebrate this grim and historic occasion.”
